The Care Guidelines is a tool for young women with breast cancer and their healthcare team to help ensure that a young woman’s unique issues are being addressed during treatment and beyond.
Due to their age and life-stage, young women with breast cancer have unique care needs that differ from older patients. Our research shows that these needs are not always being addressed when young women are treated for breast cancer.
What Rethink is doing
Rethink Breast Cancer has developed a set of recommended Care Guidelines for Young Women with Breast Cancer to inform young women of the care they should be receiving and to inform health care professionals of the unique issues that young women face which should be addressed when treating young breast cancer patients.
The Care Guidelines have been developed in consultation with younger women with breast cancer as well as our professional advisors in oncology, nursing and psychosocial support. They are based on original work by UK specialist breast cancer support charity Breast Cancer Care.
What YOU can do
There are lots of ways—big and small—that you can help our campaign. It can be as simple as tweeting out our messages to your network. It can be as ambitious as playing a leadership role in working with us to secure your local cancer treatment centre’s endorsement. Every action you take helps our efforts to ensure that all young women, no matter where they live, receive the same excellent care and support.
As a member of our healthcare community your support for the Care Guidelines means a great deal to us! We know you work hard to give your patients the very best care and hope these guidelines will be a useful reminder of their unique needs when treating young women with breast cancer.
We are calling on each and every cancer centre and hospital across Canada to endorse the Care Guidelines for Young Women with Breast Cancer by the end of 2015!
Here’s how you can help:
1. Sign up to personally endorse our Care Guidelines for Young Women. Email: email@example.com to share your support
2. Secure the official endorsement of your Cancer Centre or Hospital. Email this support to: firstname.lastname@example.org
3. Display a copy of our Care Guidelines in your clinic, waiting room, even the staff room
Are you a young woman who’s recently been diagnosed with breast cancer?
Rethink Breast Cancer’s Care Guidelines for Young Women with Breast Cancer provide information about key issues you may want to discuss with your healthcare providers involved in your breast cancer treatment and care. They are recommendations on the kind of information and support to which you should be given access as a younger woman with breast cancer.
Bring these guidelines with you to your appointments to remind your medical team about the unique issue young women face.
Are you a young woman who has already experienced breast cancer?
This campaign cannot come to life without the support of the women who have lived this experience. We need you to share the Care Guidelines campaign in a personal way with your networks so they, and the public at large, will understand the importance of the unique needs of young women with breast cancer.

3. TALK TO YOUR LOCAL POLITICIAN
We believe that local politicians can really help champion our Care Guidelines for Young Women with Breast Cancer at the hospital or cancer center in their riding. As a constituent, you can request a face-to-face meeting to tell your local politician about our Care Guidelines and why you think the care of young women in your area (and everywhere) is important. In the meeting, you can reinforce the key messages for the Campaign and ask your local politician to:
• Write a letter to your local Cancer Treatment Centre, requesting the Director to endorse our Care Guidelines
• Champion the Care Guidelines by taking a copy to their next visit to your local hospital
If you secure a meeting with your local politician and would like to talk it through with us before hand, please send a quick note to Ashley MacIsaac-Butler at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will set up a call to make sure you have everything you need.
We know that almost everyone has been touched by cancer and that is why it is important for you to help us to spread the word about our Care Guidelines advocacy campaign to ensure every young woman in Canada gets age appropriate care and support she deserves.
